Diligence is one of the great virtues commended throughout Scripture. The diligent person is marked by steady effort, faithfulness, perseverance, and careful attention to duty. Biblical diligence is not merely working hard for personal gain; it is faithfully carrying out responsibilities before God, serving Him with sincerity, and persevering in the work He has given us to do.
The Thompson Chain Reference Bible highlights diligence as a recurring theme throughout Scripture, contrasting it with laziness, negligence, and slothfulness. God’s people are called to be diligent in their work, their worship, their spiritual growth, and their service to others.
Definition of Diligence
Diligence may be defined as, careful and persistent effort in accomplishing a task; earnestness, industry, and faithfulness in duty. The Bible presents diligence as a characteristic that honours God and often leads to blessing, usefulness, and fruitfulness.
Diligence is Commended by God
One of the clearest statements regarding diligence is found in Proverbs, “Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.” (Proverbs 22:29). A diligent person develops skills, gains trust, and often receives greater opportunities. God notices faithfulness in ordinary duties before entrusting greater responsibilities. God values faithfulness in everyday work. Excellence comes through consistent effort. Diligence often opens doors of opportunity.
Diligence Requires Hard Work
The Scriptures teach that diligence is not wishful thinking or mere good intentions. It involves planning, labour, and perseverance. Proverbs 21:5 says, “The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of every one that is hasty only to want.” The diligent person carefully plans and steadily works toward worthwhile goals. In contrast, the hasty and careless person often acts impulsively and suffers loss. This teaches us that success generally follows thoughtful effort. Diligence involves patience and persistence. God’s blessing often accompanies disciplined labour. In contrast with laziness Proverbs 13:4 says, “The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.” Many people desire success, but diligence separates desire from achievement.
Jacob’s Benefits from Diligence
Jacob provides a remarkable testimony concerning his years of service under Laban. Genesis 31:40 says, “Thus I was; in the day the drought consumed me, and the frost by night; and my sleep departed from mine eyes.” Jacob worked faithfully under difficult circumstances. He endured harsh weather, sleepless nights, and repeated mistreatment.
Benefits Jacob Received Through Diligence
God Prospered Him - Despite Laban’s attempts to exploit him, God blessed Jacob’s labour. Genesis 31:42 says, “Except the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, had been with me...” Jacob’s diligence placed him in a position where God could abundantly bless his efforts.
He Gained Wealth - Jacob’s flocks multiplied greatly. His faithful stewardship resulted in substantial increase.
He Earned a Good Conscience - Jacob could honestly testify before God and men concerning his faithful service.
He Experienced God’s Protection - God saw Jacob’s hard work and injustice suffered at Laban’s hand and intervened on his behalf.
God may not always reward diligence immediately, but He sees faithful labour. Like Jacob, believers can trust that God notices every sacrifice and every act of faithful service.
Diligence in Spiritual Matters
The Bible emphasizes diligence not only in physical labour but also in spiritual growth. 2 Peter 1:5 says, “And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge.” Spiritual maturity does not happen accidentally. Believers must diligently cultivate Christian character.
The Diligence of Women Who Followed Jesus
Mark 15:47 says, “And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses beheld where he was laid.” This brief verse reveals the diligence and devotion of the women who followed Christ. After the crucifixion, when many disciples had fled, these faithful women remained near the Lord. They carefully observed where Jesus was buried so they could properly minister to Him afterward.
Characteristics of their diligence included:
Faithfulness - They remained when circumstances were difficult and discouraging.
Carefulness - They paid close attention to where Jesus was laid.
Devotion - Their actions sprang from genuine love for Christ.
Perseverance - They continued serving even after His death.
Diligence often expresses itself in small acts of faithfulness. True devotion continues even when others abandon the task. God honours those who faithfully serve Christ behind the scenes. These women became some of the first witnesses of the resurrection because they faithfully remained near their Lord.
Diligence in Christian Service
Paul encouraged believers in Romans 12:11 writing, “Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord.” Christian service should never be marked by laziness or indifference. The true marks of diligent service are reliability, consistency, enthusiasm, faithfulness and perseverance. God deserves our best effort because we ultimately serve Him and not merely men.
Warnings Against Neglect and Slothfulness
The Thompson Chain Reference Bible often contrasts diligence with slothfulness. Proverbs 10:4 says, “He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.” Proverbs 6:6 says, “Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise.” The sluggard wastes opportunities, while the diligent person makes wise use of time and resources.
Rewards of Diligence
Scripture identifies several blessings associated with diligence:
Material Blessing - “The hand of the diligent shall bear rule.” (Proverbs 12:24)
Satisfaction - “The soul of the diligent shall be made fat.” (Proverbs 13:4)
Honour - “He shall stand before kings.” (Proverbs 22:29)
Spiritual Growth - “Giving all diligence...” (2 Peter 1:5)
Divine Approval - “Study to shew thyself approved unto God.” (2 Timothy 2:15)

Diligence is a God-honouring quality that affects every area of life. Jacob’s faithful labour brought God’s blessing and protection (Genesis 31:38-42). Proverbs teaches that diligence requires careful planning and hard work (Proverbs 21:5). The women who followed Jesus demonstrated diligence through their steadfast devotion and attention to His burial (Mark 15:47).
Whether in work, family responsibilities, ministry, or spiritual growth, believers are called to labour faithfully and persevere in the tasks God has entrusted to them. The diligent believer works faithfully, trusts God patiently, and leaves the results in the Lord’s hands.
